KAATWALK is the clever artist name that covers both the modeling and singer-songwriter sides of Kaat Campbell. Kaat is a dual force on different stages; strutting a strong confident gait on the runway one day, then unleashing her powerful voice with a guitar another day. A browse on her website will lead you to that fork in the road, showcasing a modeling page where Kaat makes any outfit feel like it was made just for her, while the music portion showcases two stylish videos in which she parades around in pajamas and raincoats on the beach, saturated in her captivating voice. Although both spotlights place her front and center, the mood and intention with the clothing is what makes this Mojo article truly unique.

When Kaat started kindergarten, her mother would pick out what she’d wear each day, laying it out for her to dress. There became many days where she simply wasn’t feeling what was chosen for her. She’d ignore the clothes and pick out her own things. As a kid that always loved playing dress up with crazy dresses, princess heels, purses, and an avalanche of accessories. She would put on shows for her mother and friends. that became her “fashion walk” game. At the age of 4, it bled into American Idol where her mother would be Ryan Seacrest and she’d make grand entrances into the living room to debut the first song she ever wrote called “My Kitty.” The song was about her dream pet cat and was a subtle hint to her mother on a household addition. This was the first time she truly communicated how she was feeling through songwriting. (Fast forward, 20 years later, she’s living her childhood dreams of walking down runways, performing music, and has 5 cats. She’s stayed true to that inner child the whole time.)

Although she had this confidence in herself, her stint in private school crushed her spirit. She had to wear uniforms and accessorized with neon as best she could. She finally switched into public schools, but ended up pretty broke due to some hard times. She only had two pairs of pants, a t-shirt, and a sweatshirt as the only things that still fit her. She didn’t let the money aspect deter things. She made duct tape shoes, duct tape bows, duct tape purses, and anything else she could think of with duct tape. Selling them at school, she would use the money to buy neon and zebra duct tape.

“A big turning point in what I thought was cool, was searching Tumblr girl aesthetic on Pinterest. What my friends were wearing never really inspired me. They were all dressed in the name brands that I couldn’t afford anyways. I only shopped at Value Village. I quickly realized style has nothing to do with money, and everything to do with art.”

Kaat credits her friend Sophia helping to create that spark on wanting to model. They would do photo shoots together, trying out different angles and ideas. Her mother directed her to Kaat’s counselor from middle school Miss Jackson, who knew someone. She paid a visit and got connected to Caryn Models. They talked about goals, took some basic digitals, and signed Kaat when she was in 10th grade. She started taking it seriously after high school and decided to go to IMTA for music, modeling, and acting. She had to work 4 jobs to pay for this. After competing in 19 competitions and coming home with 10 medals, even winning first place in songwriting and second in singing. The experience netted a contract with New York Model Management Group, the production of two songs and music videos, and astute industry knowledge from her runway coach, Hannah Peltier.

The appeal of modeling comes from the concept that she gets to become the art. She’s the canvas for the artist, being used to express themselves and portray a message or vibe that they want to send into the world. The whole process becomes a beautiful collaboration between creatives.

Kaat shares that the feelings of being on a runway and being on a stage playing music have similarities. In both she’s instrumental in portraying a message and experience for the audience members. The goal is to reach people through the performance to sell something. In each, the voices shut off and her brain is silent. There’s a focus internally to create that vibe and goal for the art. Simply put, when she playing music, it becomes her art. What she wears is her choice and music comes from a more personal place from past hard times, stories, or from her friends.

“I try and reach people through my emotions and experiences so that I can help others identify feelings they didn't even know they had. You know when you were a kid and you'd listen to the radio, and certain lyrics stick out as if they were written for you. All of a sudden, you identify this feeling that you maybe weren't even aware of. Immediately you feel connected to something. It is my goal to do this for others when I play my music.”

Kaat is modeling a dress from Zeya Couture designed by Olga Greenberg. The black and white fabric was found at an estate sale. Olga felt inspired to bring new life to it, creating a truly versatile dress.

Kaat loves that you can have a high low gown look or remove the long skirt for a fun short dress. She paired the black and white pattern with a sleek piano keys inspired necklace and white textured heels. It’s a brilliant alignment with the pattern featuring curvy lines and a Woodstock inspired floral design.

Watching Kaat model the outfit was like witnessing Vanna White flip letters. She found creative ways to showcase the lampshade sleeves, the magnificence of the flowy skirt, and keep the focus on the piece of art on her.

Kaat’s stage outfit is an immediate shift of vibes on first glace. Her personality came forward as well with laughs and smirks at the camera. Magnetically charismatic, Kaat turned the outfit into an extension of that energy radiating outward.

The tweed cap was stolen from her boyfriends hat collection and it makes her feel like she’s Newsies the musical. The charcoal blazer jacket was found at a Goodwill outlet, while the pink plastic translucent sunglasses were found online as a three pack for six dollars.

The blue shirt also came from a Goodwill outlet and reads “Genius at birth, awesome by choice,” which brings smiles to anyone’s face when they read it. The denim ripped jean shorts she’s had forever. Kaat pairs them often with the tall white boots so she can avoid feeling like she needs to shave her legs. The back strung white boots were found at Plato’s closet for $17 and can be dressed up or down depending on what she pairs with them.

The key chain necklace came from a trip with her boyfriend where they were hiking near Two Harbors trying to find the 8th Cauldron. They stumbled upon a small store in the middle of nowhere and asked if they knew where it was. He drew up a map as best he could and they took off again. Just when they thought they were lost, they heard the flow of water and followed the sound. They finally found it and went to set up camp when the key was spotted blending into crevasse of the rocks. Kaat slapped it on a chain and wears it to keep adventure close to her heart.

Finally, we get to meet Meredith, the fashion duck. Meredith hangs with Kaat to support her through social anxiety. The duck is a reminder that she can be professional and still have fun, without taking life too seriously. It’s a reminder to get out of her head because she’s here to make people smile. Meredith has a tendency to make her look insane, but it does the opposite on keeper her sane.

Kaat grew up listening to Brandi Carlile, Lady Gaga, No Doubt, Adele, Aretha Franklin, Pink, Norah Jones, Eva Cassidy. That list of badass women in music are her heroes and in listening to “Monster”, you can hear pieces of them. The first lines have the attitude of Pink, the authenticity of Brandi Carlile, with the vocal tonal control of an Adele. Add in the breathy characteristics of Norah Jones and punk spin of No Doubt, and KAATWALK embodies that list of badass influences.

Kaat watched her mother heal her heartbreaks through music and as an artist, has learned to do the same thing. “Rum In Your Coffee” builds on that with a song about the devastation of a parent leaving. The beauty of KAATWALK comes with her ability to adapt to other emotions and musical collaborations. She can write rock music like her song “Hard to Love You” and “It Girl”, while switching to funnier folksy songs like “Just Kinda One of Those Things” or “Crying in My Canned Food.”

As a regular guest with Ty Pow + The Holy North, she matches the soul from Tyler Pautsch, while complimenting the more Americana, alt-country genre of the band. Her duo with multi-instrumentalist Marv Gohman (Marv & Kaat) elaborates on her skill to incorporate re-imagined options for performing her originals. Then you have her new collaboration with indie-alternative rock band Walking Phoenix, in which “Peace Of Mind” mixes her into the track seamlessly.

Peering at KAATWALK’s calendar of events, I’m reminded of that core of dedication and hard work mentioned in taking on 4 jobs to pay for a modeling pursuit. Kaat is constantly gigging, collaborating, and putting herself out into the Twin Cities, finding spaces to share her music. In following that passion, you can see the shift in clothing choices in whom she’s playing with. That communication and difference is reflected in the threads she wears.

Kaat is very inspired by Stevie Nick’s boho edgy vibe mixed with the absurdity of Lady Gaga’s mojo. At times there’s a 90’s Gwen Stefani duality between masculine and feminine styles. Kaat incorporates in corporate ties with crop tops. The capacity to realize the importance of fashion with music traces back to both Lady Gaga and Gwen Stefani.

“I'm usually somewhere on the spectrum between a magical girl-boss hippie and an angsty edgy E-boy. Every day we get the chance to create art on our bodies by styling an outfit. So what I wear really depends on how I’m feeling.”

-KAATWALK

The first goal when stepping on stage is to bring a smile to people’s faces. She brings a level of excitement and and happiness to every gig that makes an audience feel safe in their listening experience. You know there’s going to be a really cool show where you’re hearing a evolving talent stretch her legs.

You’re also seeing the incarnation of that little girl, manifesting her dreams into her dual roles as model and musician. That kinda mojo is unparalleled and worth falling in love with.
