Word of Smouth: Yonder
Part of the adventure of the “Word of Smouth” series is being introduced to new music and in this case, a whole new band. Officially playing their first gig last November, Yonder is already being buzzed about due to the strength of talent with Emma Jeanne, Hattie Peach, Oliver Gerber, Aaron Kramer, and Dylan Hilliker. Each band member already accomplished in their own right, this “super group” combines violin, keyboard, drums, and dual guitars for a textured tide of sound that at times feels hopeful and other times indignant.
Opening the set with “Archives”, a charging driving requiem ending in the repeated line “Wake me where you find me”. That energy carried into “Teeth”, the first song idea that Emma brought to Oliver, sparking the creation of Yonder. The song eerily recalls a missing teeth dream and reminding the listener that not everything has meaning. Hattie provided a haunting violin part that matched up nicely with the song.
The cohesiveness of vocals between Emma and Hattie is an obvious strength in their live show. But witnessing the interplay between them, with smirks and smiles during the songs, was another charming enticement of their stage presence. That genuine appeal succeeds when looking around the audience. It felt like a room full of friends, celebrating that original creation of music together.
Musically, it’s a bit unique to hear a 5 piece without a bass guitar, allowing the keyboard to fill that space, but it works great for them. At times Emma would hold the guitar saving space for Oliver’s parts. Songs like “How Hard” and “Oil Light” steered them down a poppier vibe, while their last untitled song gleamed with a swell of optimism.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Yonder under the bright lights of First Avenues “Best New Bands of 2024” come next January. They certainly are on the right path.
